| Lightning Bolt! |
If you ask me, these are lessons Bolt would love to share with you. Of the lot, I chose only seven.
Preparation
It's usually said that practice makes perfect. It's also true that if you practise nothing, you will be perfect at nothing! Remember the 10,000 Hours Rule? It suggests that you become a genius at whatever you invest at least 10,000 hours into. So learn to invest yourself in developing your potentials, giftings and competencies. Bolt has done that in private over and over again. He makes it look easy but behind that ten seconds of glory is four years of hardwork. Master your craft! Become a "Masterkraft"!Believe!
Irreplaceable! If you don't believe in you, who will? Remember "a million reasons to believe"?Yes. You will always have negative people and naysayers around - don't put too much energy into winning them over. Don't allow anyone run you down or run you over. Rather boost your own confidence through positive self affirmations (my favourite therapy). Never let your inspiration run out. Bolt believes in Bolt!
Mentors
Are you aware that Bolt was very good at cricket when he was much younger? Everybody may have said that it was his destiny or even suggest that basketball was the more appropriate sport - given his height and body frame.Someone saw his potentials for athletics even when it wasn't apparent. At a point it was equally suggested that he should do marathons and long distance races but someone helped him choose the sprint - where he excels effortlessly. Mentors are priceless!
Failures
What the media won't tell you are the 'failures' of Usain Bolt. You would hardly hear about what happened at the World Championships in Helsinki 2005 or Osaka 2007 and a host of other failures. They won't tell you how at one point he loathed the gym - because things were not working out. Now after putting all that behind him - he became the face that runs the place at the Olympics."Ama keep running cos the winners don't quit on themselves!"
Consistency
You should not just aim to win but to be a winner. Be the best at what you do - all day; everyday! Bolt is not a 'flash' in the pan. He did it back to back to back. He showed he is no fluke. Once you can reproduce success it sends a powerful message to your world - that you are not great by default but by design!Victory
Own it! We live in a world where people attack the greats and as such we are afraid to succeed. This is why we deny ourselves all the perks that come with winning and sulk in pseudo-humility. Bolt after doing the now famous "Treble-Treble" looked straight into the cameras and said: "there you go; I am the greatest!" (Shades of Ali if you ask me.)Bolt even has his own signature celebration style! Carry your victory with grace but never apologize for it!
Personality
This is crucial. Develop a powerful personality that aligns with your purpose. Be relatable. Don't be aloof. Even Jesus was down to earth - literally. Be a people-person. Develop your social and soft skills. Learn to smile - it's free! The better you get at it, the more improbable it becomes to run out of support. Bolt represents more than the sprints. That's why I would wake up in the middle of the night just to watch a man run for less than 10 seconds!Bolt is as real as he can be - an original Kingston property!
Just for the records, (which he holds by the way), Bolt was never running against the other seven guys. He was literally running his own race; in his own lane - against himself!
They say lightning doesn't strike twice in the same place but Bolt had other ideas - he struck gold thrice in Rio!
So now that you have my rundown, what are you saying Bolt?
Thanks for reading!
Have yourselves an inspired life!
