If you read my earlier blog posts "Stand Down" and "Faith to Faith" you would think I had the physique for boxing or at the very least had the passion for it. No, don't be afraid I don't think I even qualify for the Lightweight Division. I just love watching great people do what they love to do with excellence - this man was without question the greatest.
Colour Riot
The first thing that strikes you is his skin. Understand that in his days and to an extent now black folks didn't get much traction in the media. So for him to make himself such that the western media were falling over themselves for his presence was quite impressive.
Mouth-ed
Ali was a talker! I mean he could talk up a storm! You can tell why I liked this part of him. The media crowned him "The Motor Mouth of Sports". Most of that was trash-talking though - but it was intentional. It was part of the game. One of my favourites: "I am so bad I made medicine sick".
Believe
Ali believed he was the greatest and still is! Nobody could talk him him out of that. Mind you, he wasn't the greatest when he started saying so, he became the greatest because he kept saying so constantly. You SLAY by what you SAY! Just saying.
"Float like a butterfly sting like a bee!"
People tried to change his style of boxing simply because they thought it was odd - but Ali stuck to his guns. Now it's a signature. Be careful of those who try to define you, they may be even sincere - but they might be sincerely wrong!
Legacy
There is no legend without a legacy! Ali's impact was beyond the ring. An activist, a poet, a shrewd businessman and many other things. Many today including yours truly who love and respected Ali have never met him, we don't particularly aspire to be boxers either - but impact is not really about what you do but more about who you are!
Yes, I love Mr. Mayweather but Ali was in a class of his own.
He was the Greatest Of All Time!
