Perception vs Reality
Again I alluded to the fact that in politics, especially in developing countries, perception equals reality. Meaning that assumptions are easily and quickly regarded as fact even though they maybe otherwise. So there must be a conscious effort when addressing issues in this part of the world.I believe I can fly....just like a bird in the sky!
Classic example. Recently the top management of a first generation bank was replaced by the industry regulators because of the bank's supposed inability to meet some viability requirements. The fallout? Panic! People who didn't know better started withdrawing their money. The bank's share value dropped drastically. By the time the regulators decided to 'clarify' the issue - the damage had already been done. It therefore begged the question, did such action help or hurt this bank's brand and equity? How valuable is the life of a Nigerian?
The 'herd-lines' have been bloody - literally! In Nigeria, it seems we have lost our shock-value. It seems things have degenerated to the point where the killings of fellow Nigerians cease to appall us. Just like a junkie or a crackhead who is high on his own supply of novacaine - we may have become numb!
From the killing of Shittes in the north, who were given secret mass burial. To non-armed Biafra protesters who died in extra-judicial killings. To thousands killed by religious insurgents. To the increasing number of farmers and their families being slaughtered by armed cattle-rearers in different parts of the country - especially in Benue.
How did we get here? Where human lives have been reduced to mere statistics? Where a Police Commissioner in trying to refute media claims of a larger death toll when marauders invaded a community dismissed it by saying "only seven people were killed".
Ermm... Sai Baba, damua sosei! Kache menene?
I watched on CNN the other day where Barack Obama took time out from a NATO Summit in Warsaw, Poland to address the US because 'just two' people were killed allegedly by law enforcement officers. I mean just two bloody civilians o! Not only that, he is scheduled to attend a memorial service in their honour!Magana yakare? When people died in Medina, Aso Rock promptly issued a condolence. In the wake of the Orlando Massacre, the same thing. After the jihadist bombing in Turkey, the same thing.
How come the same thing doesn't apply to Nigerians? The silence is so loud, it is almost deafening! The maths is not adding up. Gaskiya!
Conspiracy Theorists
These lapses have given employment to such people. Who can blame them. We try so hard not to believe the body language but it's starring back at our faces. Even the 3rd ranked Nigerian is alleging that there is a "government within the government".Just yesterday a woman was murdered in cold blood in Abuja in an unprovoked attack while preaching. It has been over 800 days since the Chibok girls were abducted. Questions are being asked.
To whom it may kwansern!
This is an open call to the President's Media Team. Electioneering is not the only time to show your PR prowess. Don't misinform Baba or uninform him either. Tell him the truth and represent him as accurately as possible. Work needs to be done over there before some people will start viewing Aso Rock as another country! Thanks for Reading!
Have yourselves an inspired life!
