| His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari (GCFR) and Minister for Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN) |
You could feel the political pulse from day one, the expectations were sky high. Every of PMB's move was greeted with intense scrutiny. Nigerians were anxious to know whether they voted for change for the better or otherwise.
So far, aside from the 'anti-kwaropshun' stance of PMB which seems to be the theme of his administration, the next notable event has been the selection of ministers into his cabinet.
The selection process however is a topic for another day.
Amongst the lot, if there is one thing that Nigerians have to a large extent unanimously saluted the president, it is his ingenuity in choosing the former governor of Lagos State, His Excellency, Babatunde Raji Fashola as the Minister for Power, Works and Housing.
The antecedents of BRF is well celebrated even beyond party lines. His 'works' in Lagos State for the past 8 years speak volumes. Power, Works and Housing are strategic portfolios because they affect the ordinary Nigerian directly. For BRF, this may be his opportunity to write his name in gold.
Forgive my lengthy preamble. Now to the crux of the matter, my point exactly. It is more of a caution.
No story in my opinion greatly alludes to this scenario than that of King Saul and Shepherd boy David. Saul allowed his insecurities and jealousy get the better of him. David solved a national problem that even the most valiant of Israeli army chiefs couldn't - slaying Goliath.
That singular act catapulted an unknown David into the limelight, he instantly became a national hero, the women were already singing his praises, Saul's daughter had a crush on him and many other wonderful things happened in quick succession.
Instead of Saul taking David as a blessing to his administration, he saw him as a threat. What Saul didn't know that David was specially anointed to deal with giants (when you do the maths on the trillions of naira spent on electricity alone since civilian rule, you will agree that there is a 'giant' to be killed in that sector). Saul never knew that David's killing of Goliath would have been credited to his regime in the chronicles of kings.
As it is with every leader, there will always be younger, more skillful, perhaps more popular persons within his team. The CEO is not necessarily the most gifted rather his job is to manage the other gifted people around him to achieve a desired result.
An Africa proverb asserts thus: "No matter how tall a son grows, he still can't become older than his father."
In plain terms, PMB being a man of strong political will and character should refuse to allow himself be misguided by power-mongers to the detriment of his administration. Especially with the notion that he might be with subtlety grooming BRF as his successor in 2019.
Who knows? Anything can happen!
Nigeria oni baje o!
