| About Babel and Zerubbabels |
Babel
No pun intended here but the 'genesis' of this word dates back to man's early existence on earth. Somewhere in the mind of the first settlers who wanted to build a tower to the heavens - they knew they had to speak the same language! They also knew that effective communication was important, if not more important than the brick and mortar they used in building. The Creator saw their inordinate desires and decided that the most efficient way to halt their goal was to discomfit their communication systems.
You know the story - they couldn't continue building because you cannot build anything significant, whether it's a business, marriage or a nation when you don't develop healthy ways of communicating ideas to the stakeholders.
'Blab-el'
On July 12th 2016. I shared on this blog a post titled "What Do You Mean?" where I complained bitterly on a brewing communication crises bedeviling the country's leadership. Shades of babel almost everywhere. As a budding communicator myself I understand the importance of clarity. From my little learning I discovered that the head symbolizes leadership and the head has only one mouth for obvious reasons - so that there is no ambiguity in communication. 'Body language' has its uses but it should never usurp the mouth. Never!Case Study - True Stories.
Let's start from the insurgents. We were told that they have been "technically" defeated in December and their leader "fatally wounded" yet evidence seem to suggest otherwise. The economy was said to be "technically" in recession by the Finance Minister while a presidential aide said the economy is on the "upward rise". It even got to a point where the Transport Minister and estwhile Petroleum Minister disagreed sharply on national television while hosting a live townhall meeting. Again in March, military intelligence seemed to suggest that it had a bearing on the location of the Chibok girls but refrained from a direct operation to avoid collateral damage because the girls were being used as human shields. Starting with the TSA, in a bid to fight graft we sucked funds from commercial banks in one fell swoop and being a developing economy, the shock couldn't be absorbed immediately - no surprise massive retrenchments followed almost immediately. After much damage and public outcry, the CBN reverted to a flexible regime from the pegged regime. Recently they 'banned' nine banks from trading in FOREX. Really? The scarcity of FX is bad enough, to compound the scarcity by banning business from trading or accessing forex is counterproductive! There is something called moral suasion!You know it's serious when the official exchange rate hovers around 419 to a dollar - a notorious number if you ask me. Almost criminal in appearance.
If we want to make Nigeria Africa's foremost investment hub, we can't do that by the current tax regime, hostile business climate and counterproductive policies. It's sad that it takes at least 60 days to even incorporate a business talk more of running it!
Zerubbabels
Zerubbabels are those born or those who find themselves in the midst of the confusion but have a mindset of order, structure and productivity. Just as Zerubbabel was part of those who built the second temple, I believe we have Zerubbabels who will build a new Nigeria and champion the cause of our being the world's most desirable nation.Those who realize that diversity has to be managed delicately. We need to start pushing these people into leadership positions wherever we find them. This is a renewed call for nation-building!
