The Politics Of ASUU - An Economist's Viewpoint

Yet again, i have been forced to break the ice. I really wished i was about to write about something else than the ASUU/FG quagmire. Recent events have indicated that the face-off is fast assuming an alarming proportion. It is now stale news that the NANS president has been unceremoniously impeached. The reasons given are that he is not taking the bull by the horn instead he is exchanging pleasantries with the both parties. His deputy has since assumed his position. Only two days ago, a 400 level student of Fine and Applied Arts from my alma mater, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka was arrested at the newly opened Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu after the NDLEA detected cocaine which he ingested. He gave the reason for his actions as being the quest for developing his Art Gallery but between us, we know idleness played out as a prominent causality.
Left for me, my opinions may certainly be biased because the situation has gone out of hands.

I went around to sample the opinions of fellow Economists and here is what they had to say about it:
Comrade Nnaelue Ojijieme, a graduate of Economics and President Emeritus of Policy Analysis and Research Forum [PAREF] NAU Chapter had this to say:
"Only if these ASUU members reason logically, they will see that they are dancing to the tune of the opposition leaders of this nation. I am sure a good percentage of these persons want Jonathan to return in 2015 but they are quite oblivious of the fact that they are denting his chances of return. One thing i really don't get about ASUU's proposal of N500 billion is when they started having students in mind. They care so much about the students yet the student-lecturer relationship is in a moribund state in every school. They always use students' needs as an excuse to fill their pockets. If they really care about the students, then going on a long strike like this isn't the best way ASUU can contribute meaningfully to the lives of Nigerians.
They let Nigerians pay for their failure to elect effective diplomats. ASUU LET OUR PEOPLE GO!!!"

Ezeokoye Saxifrage Godwin, a final year student of Economics in NAU and also President Emeritus of National Fellowship of Economics Christian Students,[NAFECS] NAU Chapter had his own opinion thus:
"Right from the genesis, i have never seen ASUU as considerate. ASUU is a union that has nobody to be kicked and no soul to be damned. ASUU is a mechanism for articulating and demonstrating the grieve and spasm of some intellectual folks. Downtools of the pedagogues through a promising motion is not always the effect at some point in time. Striking at this state of our country , fraught with political rancour, social upheaval, economic downturn and religious bigotry. I am not against striking in itself since it is a veritable tool of making the government's seat hot but i feel it is a poor timing. They even said "no going back". At this point, it is a matter of conscience."
